Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms in this space known as the internet! On this auspicious day, some women in medicine get to wear a different hat – that of a loving parent. Today you (hopefully) don’t have to worry about sick patients or that stack of paperwork. Instead, you get wacky-looking stick figure drawings and macaroni art (with glitter!) on a card. Or a bouquet of flowers or fruit. Or if you’re really lucky, a spa certificate and a day off from housework.
Yes, despite female physicians being partners and contributors, there still exists the societal expectation and innate drive to be the primary nurturer of house and home. There are more men nowadays chipping in and stepping up with housework and school pickups and even the laundry. However, moms are ultimately the dames of all things domestic.
We could discuss the disparities in care-giving, or the struggles to balance a hectic work life with familial duties, or the sometimes not-so-subtle discrimination female physicians face compared to their male counterparts…
But there’s a time and place for everything, so not today.
Today you get to focus on hugs and kisses from the kids, grandchildren, godchildren, and anyone else who looks to you as their “mother”.
So Happy Mother’s Day – today and every day – to all the Super-Moms! Wear your white coat with pride, because you deserve it!
